How To Achieve Younger Looking Skin

Looking youthful even as we get older and having younger looking skin is the holy grail that most of us want to achieve, and when we begin to see lines and a little bit of slackness when we look in the mirror, it can feel like it is something that is far out of reach. While we cannot fully halt ageing, there are things that we can do to slow down the effects on our skin and keep it looking younger for longer. Let’s take a look at some of those here:

Make Sure You Cleanse Your Face Every Night

It is important to give your face a wash and cleanse it thoroughly before hitting the sack. Grime from your day, bacteria, and makeup can irritate the skin, clog pores, and cause breakouts. With a gentle face wash, remove the top layer of grime. This also allows anti-ageing skincare products to permeate deeper into the skin for better outcomes. Oil production decreases with hormonal changes in your 40s, which means that cleansing twice a day can dry out your skin and make wrinkles appear more prominent. In the morning, splash your skin with lukewarm water to refresh it.

Don’t Be Afraid To Get A Bit Of Additional Help

Where once there was a stigma around some beauty and medical procedures to help slow down or stop the effects of age on the skin, it is now commonplace, and for a good reason – it works, at all ages! Medical aesthetics are a great way to soften lines and wrinkles that might give the game away, plump up areas that have lost their fullness, and generally give your skin a bit of a helping hand.

Be Sunscreen Smart

If you want younger-looking skin, nothing is more important than wearing sunscreen (ideally, SPF 30) every day. Investing in a high quality Broad Spectrum sunscreen for your skin/face is extremely beneficial. Even 10 minutes of daily exposure to UVA rays can cause sunspots and lines and other signs of ageing in as little as three months. If your moisturizer does not include a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, use one on a daily basis to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. It not only helps to make your skin look younger but protects you against skin cancer, too.

Use Retinol (0.1%, 0.5%, or 1%)

According to studies, these vitamin-A derivatives increase cell turnover and collagen growth, which helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and fade discoloration. They can take a couple of months to begin to show an effect, particularly over-the-counter retinol, so be patient and persevere.

Incorporate Omega-3 Oils Into Your Diet

These “good fats” found in foods like salmon or other oily fish, almonds, and flaxseed increase hydration, keeping skin soft, supple, and firm. The same cannot be said for the saturated fat found in dairy products and meats, which increases free-radical damage and makes skin more prone to signs of ageing.

Switch Sleep Positions

Sleeping soundly on your stomach or the same side of your face every night causes your face to be push into your pillow for extended periods of time. This can materialize as more lines and wrinkles over time. Sleeping on your back is your best bet for avoiding skin wrinkles, but if that isn’t possible, switch which side of your face you sleep on throughout the night.
